Seasons Greetings!

It's the end of the year, a time to reflect on the past and look forward to new beginnings. The little steps and sidesteps that I took this year has been significant on a personal level. It has been all about living within the means and about living along with (& for) others. The investment to create a zone that matters has been a journey in itself. Schedules might be non-existent for now, but the lack of it has been helpful in examining present needs and future priorities. A perspective gained.
I like how this year turned out, and I look forward to the next year.

Cheers & Happy Holidays!

Movies Watch list

After recently catching Tower Heist, and Tintin on opening weekends, looking forward to some more Movies over the next few months:

Moneyball:

Why do I want to watch it?
It's a Sports movie. One of those stories that I actually know a little bit about. No over the top theatricals, and overall, feels understated.

50/50:

Story about a young man having to deal with news that he has cancer. Catch the trailer, you'll get the gist of it.

I want to watch it for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the lead, marked him as an actor to keep track of after Inception. He's come a long way since 10 Things I Hate About You. The premise of the story looks promising, the movie seems be a comedy/drama (a dramedy?), as long as it doesn't ooze in sentiment it should be worth a watch.

Sherlock Holmes:
If this isn't in your list, then you probably are not a movie fan...

The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo:
Saw the HBO telecast of the orginial version. Now for a compare and contrast with the Daniel Craig version.
How good will the new Lisbeth be? (she's in the Sherlock Holmes movie)

The Descendents:

The Descendants story is based on a rich man (Clooney) who finds out about his wife’s past after she passes away, while having to handle his two rebel daughters. Adapted from a novel.

Well, it's a Clooney drama, and if he's going to make movies in the mold of Up in the Air, then it should be worth a watch.

Hugo:
Kids movie, based on a children's book, ho hum.  But wait a minute, Martin Scorsese's making it? Okay, I'm listening.

After Tintin, it's hard not to notice that the big time directors are using kids genre as a ground to experiment with 3D technology, to push boundaries and to bring out a new experience. Hoping Scorsese uses this movie to do just that. The trailer is a WOW.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy:
After watching the BBC series (& reading the book) of the same, I'm curious about how well they've made this movie. From initial reviews, and the star cast, it should be a very good movie.

We Bought a Zoo:
Have you heard about this movie? Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson star in this movie, about a family who buy a zoo...

It's based out of a true story (hey, it says so on the trailer) and having such unexpected storyline should have its funny moments, right? Plus its directed by the Jerry McGuire director, so should be a safe one time watch atleast (like Tower Heist).

Contraband:
Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale star in Contraband, a remake of an Icelandic film (Reykjavic-Rotterdam). An ex-con smuggler working as a security guard on a ship gets the opportunity to do one last smuggling job on a freighter run.

Plan to watch it for Mark, who along with Matt Damon & Ben Affleck are a few of the promising A list stars whose movie choices I like (can't say the same about Leo, except he's got my attention now after I read that he's starring in the remake of The Great Gatsby).

Haywire:
Storyline reminds me of another movie that I watched recently (Unkonwn) and explodes with action similar to a movie that I want to watch (The Debt), except that the action sequences are more mixed-martial arts type (like The Warrior, another movie that I wanted to watch but missed it on the big screen).

Safe House:
Denzel Washington movie. Looks promising. Action! Enough said.

Chewing Gum politics

Tommy Lee Jones may believe that Chewing Gum is the most significant factor in the decline of Western Civilization, but I'm not there, yet. I'm just interested in the principle of chewing gum - a bit of flavor to start off with, followed by meaningless activity without a purpose (I'm talking only about gum chewing, though I can see how this can easily be taken out of context to mean, say, sky diving?). Anyway, if you believe in the benefits of chewing gum, then I can't (& I guess nobody can) help you. Ultimately those who go for the flavor end up sticking it under a bar stool or a bench. And if you find a gum on your shoe, don't waste your breath shouting, or scattering people with your Ballet / Kung-Fu skills. Just keep sticky walking.
What's politics got to do with it? Nothing, that's the point.

Got me thinking on the out of context interpretation.....off to get some gum.

Some more quotes from Yes Minister

Some of the stalling techniques & handling of 'unwelcome initiatives' :)

"Stalling Cabinet Ministers: the 5-stage formula
1. The administration is in its early months and there's an awful lot to do at once.
2. Something ought to be done but is this the right way to achieve it?
3. The idea is good but the time is not ripe.
4. The proposal has run into technical, logistic and legal difficulties which are being sorted out.
5. Never refer to the matter or reply to the Minister's notes. By the time he taxes you with it face to face you should be able to say it looks unlikely if anything can be done until after the election."

"Any unwelcome initiative from a minister can be delayed until after the next election by the Civil Service 12-stage delaying process:
1. Informal discussions
2. Draft proposal
3. Preliminary study
4. Discussion document
5. In-depth study
6. Revised proposal
7. Policy statement
8. Strategy proposal
9. Discussion of strategy
10. Implementation plan circulated
11. Revised implementation plans
12. Cabinet agreement"

How to discredit an unwelcome report

Play by play from Yes Minister...

"How to discredit an unwelcome report:

Stage One: Refuse to publish in the public interest saying
1. There are security considerations.
2. The findings could be misinterpreted.
3. You are waiting for the results of a wider and more detailed report which is still in preparation. (If there isn't one, commission it; this gives you even more time).

Stage Two: Discredit the evidence you are not publishing, saying
1. It leaves important questions unanswered.
2. Much of the evidence is inconclusive.
3. The figures are open to other interpretations.
4. Certain findings are contradictory.
5. Some of the main conclusions have been questioned. (If they haven't, question them yourself; then they have).

Stage Three: Undermine the recommendations. Suggested phrases:
1. 'Not really a basis for long term decisions'.
2. 'Not sufficient information on which to base a valid assessment'.
3. 'No reason for any fundamental rethink of existing policy'.
4. 'Broadly speaking, it endorses current practice'.

Stage Four: Discredit the person who produced the report. Explain (off the record) that
1. He is harbouring a grudge against the Department.
2. He is a publicity seeker.
3. He is trying to get a Knighthood/Chair/Vice Chancellorship.
4. He used to be a consultant to a multinational.
5. He wants to be a consultant to a multinational."

Look pal...,

Over the events that have transpired between the Govt and Anna during the last few days, It's impossible not to get drawn into the argument of who's right and who's dictating terms, etc. etc. As the events played out today, I saw/heard some interesting things on the telly...
First off, the Govt. seems to be completely silent now (on Friday - Aug 19 2011), letting Anna & co., overkill with their comments on apparent victory. It's a safe strategy, waiting for an opponent to make some stupid remark, then pounce on it and make that the issue. It's worked for them in the past, and yep, it will work for them now and in future.
Secondly, everyone's shaking their heads and going 'oh, Anna & co. seem to dictate things, not the way to go.' Well, that's what you get as a Govt when you overplay your hand. I seriously thought Govt got called out on their own bluff this round (game's still not over). With all due respect, the drafting terms discussions have been going on for over four months now, and there were some serious climbing down done during this time by both parties. For one, when the first fast was called off, there were promises to take the draft made by Anna & co. and engage them in discussions. What transpired during those meetings, we really don't know. Those who accuse of Team Anna being arrogant, I wish they could display the 'missing' audio tapes of the 'discussions' that took place. I would love to hear that and then judge after knowing what was the rationale behind certain exclusions and inclusions from the draft made by Anna. This might be as an effect of those discussions, we might never know, if those tapes are never found (Strange how things have a tendency to go missing if it suits the Govt).
Due respect to some of the Anna's experts, I thought the step to hold out was a masterstroke. It's not practical, I'm sure a climbdown is on cards, but as a negotiation tactic, it was brilliant. Bending or showing weakness at any instance would have blown them away by now. You don't need to think or look too hard, just the 'fast against corruption' that happened soon after Anna's fast, you know the one that I was talking about, where the threat of arrest after police detention (& god knows what other threats) got the person running out of town in a salwar kameez. Enough protests have fizzled out under similar circumstances. It didn't happen in this case, maybe Anna must be thanking the poor freeloader for giving an insight as to the capabilities and actions of Govt. All things said & done, ouch, that mistake of overreaching by the Govt is going to make a few 'intellectual' heads roll.. :)
Next, I'm frankly surprised by all the 'oh, it's attack on the democracy and parliament' comments. Wow, didn't you think the preventive detention, the arbitrary police actions against common citizens to be undemocratic, or have people gotten so used to it that it's acceptable. I was astonished to watch an interview on CNBC where a minister was saying that for every political protest you must expect an arrest, that he himself has courted so many arrests under this section, etc. etc.
By making Anna jump hoops and hoping that he would trip up while doing them or try to catch him cutting corners making the whole country watch too, the Govt overplayed it's hand again. Anna not only called out the play but also upped the ante and called an audible by staying in jail until 'his terms' were met. Result: Blitz - Headless chickens running around while an old man stayed in 'detention, not arrest' and began his fast. Now That was a raise, Mr. Ministers, and you were pot-committed to play along.
Finally, every one who is fighting the Govt's fight please remember that the Govt is already armed itself with rights to self-interest like raising its own salaries, easing tainted ministers and corrupt officials into plum public sector postings, trying to bell the judiciary themselves, all in the eye-wash of they are 'self-regulating'. Well, to the oft asked question 'Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?' (who will guard the guards) someone's atleast making an effort.
'This would create a dangerous precedent'. To Quote a response to that exact statement from Yes Minister:  'Translation: "If we do the right thing now, we might have to do the right thing again next time"  That's what they're really saying :)

With all due respect to political class of the country including the officials - This has been a disaster of epic proportions, and as politicians and democracy experts worry about the over-reaching consequences of this bill, please remember that every other citizen lives under the fear of law.
I admire the unsinkable ability of Anna to remain afloat despite every attempt to drown him with authoritarian tactics. While his ability to rise has also directly proportional to the predictability of Govt, what has sustained him has been the strength and resolve of his commitment against corruption and in staying his course.
Lose sight of that, and/or try to 'overplay the pair of aces', you will be blindsided. To Quote Yes Minister: "The Opposition aren't really the opposition. They are only the Government in exile. The Civil Service are the opposition in residence."

Disclaimer: Irresistible events and actions over the past few days prompted this blog, I'm neither for or against any version of the Lok Pal Bill, I find lots of things said and done by both the Government and Anna & co. acceptable, and in equal measures not acceptable.. I'm not taking sides - not planning to get drawn into that argument at all, just plan to have fun watching.

Tech shopping?

With easy plug-and-play gadgets and user friendly tech available nowadays, it should be no surprise that the 'assembling' once considered to be domain of a specialist, is now open to the likes of me. Thankfully, my wallet is not what it was, otherwise would have become bankrupt doing stupid things like gadget shopping! Not for me. And definitely not now. Before busting bank for gadgets, check if you can assemble 'em. It won't bleed you.
At the end of the hour, what was in a box was sorted, assembled, installed and working.... No techies, only dummies...
Removed internal HD from a non-working pc and reformatted it. Now using it as an 'external hd' (just a casing is cheap!)
Reformatted the external disk to back up both pc (NTFS format) as well as ps3 (FAT32 format) data.
Replaced battery inside ups, after old one conked out. This one did it just to prove that casing could be re-used.
Never knew so many options were possible...Still can't believe the ease in which putting gadgets together has evolved to. Now back to work...

Online forums

Over the past few months, I've started to do some serious 'web crawling' for some tech deals and on the look-out for a few quick D-I-Y tech updates. The end result has been so rewarding only due to one huge fact, Online Forums. This seemingly invisible yet thriving arena full of tech gladiators and anonymous gurus, all with the intent of sharing knowledge on the things which should be commonsense for them, but of immense help to newbies like me. Just simple stuff like partitioning your external hard drive in both NTFS & FAT32 (more than 32GB) formats could be very challenging if not for these forums.
Thank you for all the posts, all the troubleshooting tips, the step-by-step guides, the knowledge base, and the occasional video guide too. And on behalf of a few gamer friends, would also like to thank all the 'walk-through' forums.. :)

A year on....

I'm not certain about what the future holds. It was certain, atleast to me, a year back, when I called it quits that 2010-11 would be all about rearranging priorities, and more importantly down time with family. Atleast for a year, I told myself. 4th of July it was.
A year on, after enjoying the period of loads of family time, and gainful employment (i.e. eating, sleeping, and lots of tv, maybe a bit of freelancing on the side), I am all padded up (literally too!) and ready to begin again a new innings.

What a feeling...

Today, the day of IPL4 Finals. Not that it means anything great, except that CSK is looking to hold on to the championship for one more year.
So they didn't set the auction scene on fire - they were probably the only team which was chasing down their old team, and looked very foolish and predictable doing it. The other teams were having a good laugh at CSK then.
Now, at the end of the season, it's turned out to be the smartest decisions. They surely have to be one of the most profitable franchises in IPL. That's at the business end of things.
A big game, finals, at Chennai. Never imagined that it would happen, given the Board tendency to host crucial matches at other metros. Today, hopefully RCB & Gayle can be stopped. Either way, going to enjoy the finals, at Chennai!

My first choice is secondary?

This is not a lesson in Conflict management. And it most certainly isn't a lesson in assertiveness. It's just the way I'm programmed. Given a choice to choose from say 3 different phones, I would probably pick one which I like easily, but in the same situation where two others were also told to pick their favourite phone at the same time, I have a tendency sometimes (not always) to not make the first choice, to take the back seat.
I was thinking this, and ofcourse many reasons and justifications popped up, like
Lack of confidence?
Avoiding Conflict?
I seriously contemplated these aspects in such a situation, and it could probably be any or both of these, but I don't believe so. And no, I'm not in denial or defensive. Hear me out. :)
Generally, when I'm not comfortable or relatively unaware about a situation, I prefer to err on the side of caution, and wait & see why people make the choice that they make. Yes, more often than not end up missing out on opportunities, but in the long run it evens out. In cases where I'm a little aware of the choice that I want to make, I usually end up with what I choose. Yep, I know this is what most people do in these situations, so why the heck am I writing about it?
Well, it still gets me pretty wound up when someone just takes it for granted that their choice is more important than others! So what, my first choice is secondary?
It most definitely is a pet peeve, a red flag, a no-no in my books.

Fession session: Following threads

Being defensive, not in the best of shape to handle things, still in a state of questioning.
Why?
Conflict with things around. When action (or inaction) leads to an unexpected outcome, process repeats.
Why?
Pushing boundaries both ways, hoping to find the ‘equilibrium’.
----------------
Not sure if asking the right questions, or finding right answers. Feels like rowing upstream.
Is this the way to be looking?
Are there other aspects to consider?
What changed?
 How to solve?
What is the question?
Missing dimensions?

Hoping that I catch this theme another day, another time. Time to ponder and to catch more random threads.

In search of a new dawn

Sounds cheesy?
I was surprised when a 'lawyer' postcard arrived at our home with a propaganda message, and a small 'happy new year' card, yep, three months after the new year! Well, clearly this 'postcard uncle' is on campaigning mode, asking people to 'elect and select' him for whatever post, while almost violating all the ethical standards and other things that lawyers are supposed to abide by.

Clearly, you must vote for him to find out "Legal community எங்கே நிற்கின்றது"
Good luck!

Over complicated?

Why complicate life without any basis? Why get pulled into things that I do not want to? Life lessons may be good, but not essential, until I choose to act on it? Right? so I thought.
Sometimes life's fair, and is really simple, if I choose to wait. Life lessons: even in FF, things can go your way, and allow you to make choices, if you are prepared for it.
I'm prepared now, better than last week.

And life goes on....

The things that I was wary of committing, the things that I hoped to defer until better times, the conversations which I had hoped to avoid, came to a pass without much of an event. An expected storm, only it didn't happen... Another non-event, and life goes on....for now. Whew...

Thought for the day

'So how can I trust you while doing business?'.
'Our relationship is not based on trust, but on mutual benefit (/ need)'. Random movie quote.

Deliberately vague

Ok, now's as good a time as any for me to reiterate about my blogs, more for my own future reference than anything else. My blogs typically go like this: an idea with some thoughts around it; write a sentence or two about it, read and re-read it, and then think of what I want to say, and then edit it in a generic, a 'connect the dots' blog, and also add any random tangent thoughts which come as I am typing up what I want to say.
Often I get what I say when I re-read say after a month or so. But every now and then, will have to recollect the circumstances around when I wrote the blog, for me to place the context of the blog. Not much to it, but these blogs do keep me reminded of associated memories, some of which seeps into the blog itself.
Connecting the dots is a rewarding experience, not just because of the 'blast from past' thing, but also because it opens up other interpretation possibilities, sometimes I connect the dots differently for the heck of it and get a different picture. Hmmm, something to ponder about.

Life lessons

What is it good for? Absolutely nothing...' reminded of Jackie Chan / Chris Tucker saying it in Rush Hour, as I embark, yet again, on a quest to do things that I don't feel like doing!!!
Then why did/do/would I do it? is the question that I should ask myself, whenever I pause to think about it. But then, when push comes to shove, I don't ask myself that question, which is why I keep fast forwarding into many mistakes...2011 here I come!!
There must be some sense into the nonsense that I am most of the time. A series of ideas, thoughts, action / inaction, often follow a (peculiar?) cycle in my life, often overhauling existing routine. Then, when the dust settles again, there seems to be not much to it.
As I ponder the logic (lack of), another quote "if I could do it all over again, I would!!" comes to mind. And that seems to be the other part which keeps the vicious cycle called my life going. One part keeps doubting, other part keeps doing!
Tough life it may seem, but life lessons is what I call it.....One thing that I have figured out about my life though, that the 'normal' play button seems to be broken; I come in two speeds, pause and fast forward! :)

Minefield

My room may have looked like that to many, but to me it was 'my room'. I knew exactly where things were, well sort of, so I was ok with my apparent disorganized (lazy) way of putting things. When I was settling into a nice little routine, enter 'soora-veli (typhoon)'. On one horrific week when I was off to Bangalore things changed in my room, forever!
In one big 'spring cleaning' sweep, my room became an alien to me. Now after ages of preservation and restoration, I still can't find all pieces of the 'what's where' puzzle, but I hope to find so soon.
No longer a walk in the park, my room's well and truly a minefield, as I found out last week... Ouch!
