Board Games - My new obsession

Board games, no I'm not talking about games like Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo or even Scotland Yard. I mean, yes, they are board games too, but those games are of the past. They are freely available to all, and they are not a new 'new' thing to be obsessed about.

I'm talking about games like Risk, Stratego, The Settlers of Catan, Power Struggle, 7 Wonders, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Die Macher, etc. Most of these games are not available at the nearest book store, or game store.

So why this obsession? Well, it all started off with thinking about getting an expansion for The Settlers of Catan. We've been playing Risk & Catan for ages now, thanks to my sis and bro-in-law. I always kept them as the primary gaming group the games require only 3-4 players and I didn't know how much my group of friends would enjoy playing them.

All that changed with the discussion of games during new year. I kept talking about the games and about the high cost of importing them, and how its not feasible to get more than a handful of games. Enter, my friends. While their impression of games is very much like others, begins and ends with games like Monopoly (outgrown them in the teens itself), they were willing to listen to me while I described the game play.

We started off the journey with a couple of quick games of Scotland Yard, which piqued the interest of many non-gaming friends. I was happy. Next on board was Risk. This took their interest levels to a new high, and now we're planning for monthly gaming sessions. Yay, I'm super happy. I've gone ahead and bought a couple of more games - Power Struggle, & 7 Wonders.
